May 2025: Troop 22 Newsletter

Updated: May 9

Gearing up for Summer!

As we move into the final stretch of the school year, Troop 22 has an exciting lineup of activities to wrap up spring strong and get ready for summer adventures! Whether you're knocking out merit badges, helping our community, or preparing for summer camp, there’s something for everyone to get involved in.

But before we get going, a BIG shout out to all of the scouts that showed up to help Owen on his Eagle Project this past weekend, the new volleyball net is a resounding hit with the students at Barranca Mesa Elementary! Service hours will be added to your profile this week!

Here’s a look at what’s coming up in May:

5/3 – LA Cares Food Drive - Have your scout signed up yet?

Community service is a core part of Scouting, and this is a great way for every Scout to give back.

5/2 + 5/10 - Complete Climbing Merit Badge

We'll finish the indoor climbing requirements on Thursday, 5/2 at the YMCA, then head out for a climbing day trip on Saturday, 5/10 to complete the outdoor portion. Make sure you bring all your gear, your blue cards, and be ready for a fun day on the rock! Be sure to listen for all of the details at the upcoming scout meetings!

5/14 – Court of Honor & Troop Elections

  • Celebrate the hard work and achievements of our Scouts this spring at our Court of Honor meeting, which includes a fun potluck!

  • Scouts will also vote in the next round of troop leaders, scouts should be prepared to speak to why they should be considered for their next leadership role.

  • Potluck details:

    • You voted for a potluck to celebrate our upcoming Court of Honor next Wednesday, May 14th, and now it’s time to make it happen!

Please note the early start time: 6:30 PM, beginning with the Court of Honor ceremony, followed by the potluck—so please plan accordingly.

Each patrol has been assigned a food category (mains, sides, drinks, or desserts). We also need:

      • 1 scout from each patrol to help with setup at 6:15 PM or cleanup after the event

      • At least one parent to help oversee the setup/cleanup

      • One adult leader to grab plates, bowls, cups, and utensils from the troop shed ahead of time

      Sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1--BrffC5lshaFf4kB0Smk2M0Xf6HZmeQ8akXT3dAa5g/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks for pitching in to make this a fun and meaningful evening for everyone!

5/22 – Micah, Andrew & Cade Eagle COH

We’re excited to celebrate several of our scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout! 🦅 Help us recognizing their hard work, leadership, and accomplishments. More details coming soon...

5/28 @ 6:00 PM – Swim Test for Camp Geronimo Attendees

  • Mandatory for Scouts attending summer camp, otherwise you will need to test at camp.

  • We have the deep end of the Aquatic Center pool reserved for Wed, May 28th at 6pm for summer camp swim tests.

(moved to 6/4) – Photography Merit Badge Workshop

Scouts will learn the basics of photography, including how to compose a great shot, use lighting effectively, and tell a story through images. We’ll cover both technical skills and creative techniques, with hands-on practice using cameras or smartphones. Scouts will complete a photo project to demonstrate what they’ve learned and discuss how photography can be used for communication and storytelling.

Other important items to note:

  • Camp Geronimo medical forms A, B & C + copy of insurance card (front & back) due to Mrs. Hovey ASAP.

  • Reminder: Always CC Another Adult in Scout Communications

As a reminder, whenever a Scout and a leader communicate via email, it is essential to always CC another registered adult or a parent/guardian. This practice is a core part of Scouting’s Youth Protection guidelines. It helps ensure transparency, protects both the Scout and the adult, and fosters a safe and open environment for everyone.

Thank you for helping us uphold the highest standards of safety and respect in all our communications.
